Hair Loss in Women an Overview – Hair Loss Treatment Australia

Australia, Melbourne -- LEIMO.COM -- 05/31/2013 -- Women’s crowning glory is their hair. But if the hair is affected by conditions, such as hair loss, and thinning of hair, the women’s self-esteem goes down a thousand levels. Hair loss in women is more than a minor cosmetic problem. It has the potential to make you feel vulnerable (naked) and can cause unfavorable changes in how you feel about yourself.
About 20% of women have hair loss, also known as alopecia or pattern baldness. Hair Loss usually develops gradually and may be patchy or diffuse (all over). In women, androgenic alopecia is probably the most common. Roughly 100 hairs are lost from your head every day. The average scalp contains about 100,000 hairs. Hair grows from its follicle at an average rate of about 1/2 inch per month. Each hair grows for 2 to 6 years, then rests, and then falls out. A new hair soon begins growing in its place. At any one time, about 85% of the hair is growing and 15% is resting. Loss of hair or baldness occurs when hair falls out but new hair does not grow in its place.
Hair loss in women typically does not result in complete baldness, as is often in the case of men. Why do women suffer hair loss and what can she do about it? What are the factors that can contribute to women’s hair loss? These nagging questions can be answered and can be attributed to some factors, like estrogen and hormonal imbalance.
Although the role of estrogen in hair growth in humans is not clear, physicians usually recommend the use of both oral and topical estrogens to treat hair loss in women. Oral estrogen is found in contraceptive pills that are used by women to control birth. The estrogen in these pills is said to be an effective aid in hair loss treatment. But women should select pills that have no androgenic activity. Women with androgenetic alopecia are also warned not to use androgen precursors or testosterone, such as DHEA.
Hormone also plays a great role in women’s hair loss. Women who are in their pre-and-post menopausal period suffer thinning of scalp hair and women suffer a resting phase of hair follicles that result in hair loss after giving birth. Female hair loss, often referred to as the catch-all term alopecia, has different degrees of severity, causes and treatments. The good news is many causes were resolved over time with an active, holistic and hopeful approach.
In extreme cases of hair loss in women, doctors may suggest some form of cosmetic surgery.  This involves either stretching the remaining hair to cover the affected area or transplanting hair from another part of the head.
