Stop Hair Loss Induced by Thyroid Disorders

Australia, ( Hobart ) -- ( HAIR-LOSS-CAUSES.CO.UK ) -- { 05/28/2013 } -- Hair as they say is a barometer of health.  Our hair is the fastest-growing part of our body. When the body is in crisis, the hair cells can shut down to redirect energy elsewhere.  For this reason, our hair can be thought of as nature’s barometer, signaling the state of our overall health and well-being.
Our hair can be a signal or symptom of an ailment. For instance, many people notice rapid hair loss as a symptom of their hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are diseases of the thyroid glands. The former occurs when your thyroid gland produces too much hormones while the latter occurs when your thyroid gland produces too little hormones. Either way, they both affect the body’s metabolism which impacts other functions in the body such as hair growth. These diseases can result in hair thinning and eventual loss of hair.
Some people actually say that hair loss is the worst symptom of their thyroid problem — hair thinning, large amounts of hair falling out of the bathroom sink accompanied with changes in hair texture (dry and coarse).
The following are ways to help stop hair loss caused by thyroid disorders. But first, before going into a conclusion that your hair loss is due to a thyroid disorder, it is very important to be evaluated by a dermatologist or a hair expert to rule out any other causes — such as infection, malnutrition, genetics and other hair loss causes. They might do some tests to find out the other causes of hair loss.
If your dermatologist has concluded that you have thyroid-related hair loss, then you have to be patient. Remember, hair loss will slow down and may stop once hormone levels get stabilized and functions are in normal range; however, this may take a few months’ time.
You need to make sure the hair loss is not because of your medications, especially if you are on medications like levothyroxine (i.e., Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid, Levothroid). If you are experiencing prolonged or extreme hair loss as a side effect of taking this medication, then it would be best to consult a doctor to ask for advice and other alternative solutions to avoid excessive loss of hair.
Also make sure you are taking the right drugs and ensure that you are on the right TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) treatment and avoid being undertreated to stop hair loss. Doctors believe that a TSH of around 1 – 2 is favorable for most people to feel well and avoid having hypothyroid or hyperthyroid symptoms like hair fall.
In a recent study, it was found that 90 percent of women with thinning hair were deficient in iron and the amino acid lysine. Lysine is the most difficult amino acid to get enough of via diet. Lysine helps transport iron, which is the most important element in the body and essential for many metabolic processes including the growth of healthy hair. When lysine and iron levels are low, the body probably switches some hair follicles off to increase levels elsewhere. In order to stop hair loss caused by thyroid disorders, you need to get a good amount of iron and lysine in your diet. Good sources of lysine are meat, fish, grains, fruits (pears, apricot, banana and apples), vegetables (pumpkin, peas, cauliflower, and celery) and nuts (cashew, almonds and Brazil).
